About us

Trafford Council and its partners in the public, private and third sectors have a Vision which sees us working together to close inequality gaps and maximise Trafford’s huge potential.

Our vision: Trafford – where all our residents, businesses and communities thrive.

Trafford is a lively, prosperous place to put down roots and build a career. The council and Trafford schools employ around 8,000 people, who are central to making the area great. In return for their commitment, the council offers its employees development opportunities, as well as a fair and flexible workplace. The council is a Living Wage Employer.

Trafford EPS is a friendly team of Educational Psychologists. We apply a consultation model to support children, families and schools and there is a strong commitment to person-centered approaches and co-production. We also have a strong commitment to social justice and anti-discriminatory practice within our team.

Trafford LA operates a fully traded model of service delivery and schools buy in Service Level Agreements (SLAs) at the start of the academic year, typically at least 30 hours for a primary school and up to 120 hours for a large secondary. Work in schools is a combination of consultation, assessment, and training, there is also the option to develop therapeutic work in schools.

Trafford EPS values, and proactively seeks, systemic project work and innovation within practice; we have cultivated a number of creative commissions including:

  • EP secondments to other teams within Trafford Council (e.g. Early Years Service); EPs working within Trafford’s Autism and Social Communication Pathway to support multidisciplinary assessments and strategic decision making;
  • EPs working within Trafford’s Virtual School to complete casework and support systemic projects (currently Belong: Attachment and Trauma Aware schools)
  • Leading on the development of a multi-agency Emotionally Based School Non-attendance (EBSNA) work; this year we are rolling out whole school training in the area across the LA.
  • Using Video Interaction Guidance (VIG)/Video Enhanced Reflective Practice (VERP) interventions with parent/carers and education practitioners.
  • Whole School and College Approach (WSCA) working alongside Mental Health Support Teams (Trafford Thrive); this year each EP is working with one school to support embeddig this approach across a school.

In addition, we have successfully rolled out Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) training in primary and secondary schools and provide ongoing supervision to trained ELSAs.

We regularly work with The University of Manchester on doctoral thesis commissions, over recent years these have focused on EBSNA and social justice and we are now looking at research to support the development of our ELSA work with schools.

EPs interested in developing a specialism are supported to work towards this goal and encouraged to take a lead in developing the team’s knowledge and expertise in their area of interest.

In addition to SLA time, all Educational Psychologists provide statutory advice for Education Health and Care Needs Assessments.
