Assistant Headteacher (SENDCO and Achievement for All Lead)

Start Date: Tuesday 22nd April 2025 (or sooner if available)

Salary: Leadership Range 1-5 (£49,781 - £54,939)

This is an exceptional opportunity for a skilled, experienced, committed and ambitious leader and / or SENDCO to develop as an Assistant Headteacher in a thriving school and prepare for leadership in a strong and growing Trust.

Mayfield Primary School is a warm and nurturing school, serving a predominantly White-British community which has high levels of disadvantage. In 2020-21 we expanded our school to 2FE and our Nursery provision, including Rising Threes, continues to grow.

From September 2024, the current Headteacher, Mr Mark Couper-Barton, became the Executive Headteacher of both Mayfield Primary School and our sister school in the Trust, East Crompton St George’s CE Primary. As a result of this, and the growth of the school, we restructured our senior leadership team to build in additional quality and capacity.

We have a committed, highly motivated, vibrant and creative teaching team, people who want the best for our children. Early Years is really strong. KS1 has significantly improved, although there is still work to do to ensure that all children build on the excellent foundations of Early Years. At KS2, we have been on average, 20% behind national ARE, with the exception of much improved 2024 outcomes. This gap is a challenge and the impact from the disruption of lockdown is still working through our school, as it is in many others. Our children need expert, precise teaching to enable them to become confident learners who can remember more and apply that learning.

Our priority in making this appointment is to secure an experienced and outstanding leader of SEND within an ethos of Achievement for All, with a track record of implementing SEND policy, improving SEND provision and outcomes of pupils with SEND, who can lead and model the quality of practice needed for all staff.

SEND was identified in our June 2024 Ofsted as an area that requires further development, and as a school and trust, leaders are committed to addressing recommendations.

Our Assistant Headteacher (SENDCO and Achievement for All lead) will:

  • Support teachers to adapt the delivery of the curriculum to meet individual needs, including for pupils with SEND.
  • Support teachers to check carefully enough that pupils’ knowledge is secure before moving on, particularly for pupils with SEND.
  • Support teachers to accurately identify the wide range of SEND that pupils experience, so that they can provide the most effective support for pupils to access the curriculum.
  • Ensure pupils with SEND achieve as well as they can.

The Senior Leadership Team at Mayfield Primary School includes the Executive Headteacher, two Deputies, an Assistant Headteacher, an Executive Business Manager and two additional members of SLT. One Deputy Headteacher focuses on the quality of education and the development of teaching, particularly in our growing KS2; the second Deputy Headteacher focuses on the pastoral provision, pupil welfare, safeguarding and behaviour and acts as Head of School when the Executive Headteacher is at East Crompton St George’s, and the Assistant Headteacher focuses on the Quality of Education and Care in EYFS and KS1.

The Assistant Headteacher leading SEND and Achievement for All, will lead staff training and development in relation to SEND, and may report directly to the Local Governing Committee in relation to this specialist area, ensuring that the Assistant Headteacher has the breadth of experience and the training, mentoring and investment to progress as school leaders, ideally in our Trust.
